The growth in the so-called gig economy means the number of workers denied employment protection in the UK has doubled in the past decade, according to the TUC. The union organisation said there were 1.5 million people living without the prospect of things like redundancy pay and protection from unfair dismissal. Its report, titled Living On The Edge, calculated that three million were in "precarious jobs", amounting to 10% of the country's workforce. They included, the TUC said, staff on zero-hours contracts - contracts with no guarantee of minimum hours which it has previously demanded are scrapped.
