The European Court has once again made the headlines with its understandable ruling surrounding the misuse of work computers for personal use.
It is of course different if your employer's policy is to permit such use of social media, but as many do not, you could find yourself in deep water.
You might want to think carefully about sending private online messages during work hours – your boss now has the right to read them, and fire you for ‘misusing’ work computers. Europe’s court of human rights (ECHR) ruled that companies CAN snoop on private messages on services such as Yahoo Messenger. The case centred around a Romanian engineer who was fired after using Yahoo Messenger to chat both with his professional contacts and with his fiancee and brother. The case has chilling implications for people’s use of work computers and smartphones for their own purposes.
